Applications to Nursery

Our Nursery is led by a qualified teacher, supported by a fully trained nursery practitioner and with additional support from a teaching assistant(s). Nursery have their own activity-filled playground, with games and playthings changed daily and set-up to support early learning goals. We use his space alongside the classroom throughout the year and provide outdoor-weather wear for those colder, wetter days!

We offer a full-time (9:00-3:20pm) Nursery for 26 children and it is fully inclusive. Children come to assembly once a week, may play alongside Reception in the ‘big playground’, can access learning resources from older classes and become imbued in our special ethos. We think Nursery at Hawley is a great foundation for their learning journey.

Parents are very welcome to be a part of settling-in and then to contribute to Nursery life – be that supporting one of our many trips, reading or bringing something special in to share. We always start the year with an evening party to welcome our families!

We manage our own Nursery admissions and we strictly abide by Camden’s admissions criteria. Please note that places in our nursery are offered with these criteria, and not on a first-come, first-served basis.

It is important to note that a place in our Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place in the school.

The closing date for nursery applications for September 2026 is 31st March 2026.  Offers of places are made by the school in the May preceding the Autumn start date.

Applications to Reception

When applying for a Reception place at Hawley, all applications must be made online, directly to the Camden Admissions department. Click the link below to apply on the E-Admissions website.

The closing date for Reception applications for September 2026 will be in January 2026. Late applications can continue to be made after this date. 

Offers of places in the Reception class are made through EA admissions in the April preceding the autumn start date. The National Primary Offers day is 16th April.

Admissions Criteria

We are located in the London Borough of Camden and the school population is generally drawn from the local community of Camden Town and Kentish Town. We are a community primary school and as such our admissions criteria for Reception and Nursery are that places will be offered to children on a full-time basis.

There is no fixed catchment area and in the event of over-subscription, below is the order in which Camden Council determines Reception places for its community schools, which is also followed for our Nursery admissions. Places will be offered in descending order to:

  1. Children with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).
  2. Looked-after children (children in public care) or a child who was previously looked-after but immediately after being looked-after became subject to an adoption, child arrangement or special guardianship order. This also includes previously looked after children who were in state care outside of England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted.
  3. Children with a sibling* (brother or sister) at the same school who will still be on roll when they join and are living at the same address. (*Sibling refers to brother or sister, half brother or sister, adopted brother or sister, step brother or sister, or the child of the parent/carer’s partner where the child for whom the place is being sought is living in the same family unit at the same address as the sibling.) A sibling relation does not apply when the older child will leave before the younger one starts. Only pupils in Reception to Year 5 can be considered as siblings for coordinated admissions. Nursery pupils cannot be considered as siblings because they are not compulsory school age.
  4. Children whom the Council accepts have an exceptional medical or social need for a place at the school. There will have to be a clear link between the child’s exceptional need and the school in question. The local authority will also accept recommendations from the SEN exceptional needs panel for an applicant whose needs support a place at a particular school.
  5. Children whose parent is a qualified teacher or teaching assistant working at the relevant school for two years or more at the time of application and / or children of a qualified teacher at the relevant school who has been recruited to fill a vacancy for which there is a skill shortage.
  6. Other children, with priority given to those living closest to the school measured ‘as the crow flies’ from the home address to the centre of the school. The address given must be the one in which the child normally resides with those who have parental responsibility or legal guardianship. Distances are measured using a computerised mapping system.
