We place great emphasis upon developing key knowledge and skills in maths so that children can apply a solid understanding of number to solve problems in a wide range of real-life situations.

All maths lessons are carefully planned with an emphasis on the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach from the Early Years through to the oldest children in our school. This means that children are exposed to conceptual ideas at a concrete (hands on) level with a range of apparatus before moving on to pictorial representations. Doing so develops children’s deep conceptual understanding and skills proficiency, which supports the next move into abstract mathematics.

Daily maths lessons are designed to be interactive with significant emphasis on children discussing their ideas and different strategies. Through discussing their ideas, children construct new understanding, engage in a supportive, collaborative practice, take responsibility for their learning and allow the teacher a window into their thinking which enables appropriate action to helpthem progress.
